The business world is not conducive to opting out. Sure, there are many aspects where we can simplify our lives and have more rudimentary accounting systems, management policies, and personal relationships. But we still have a life of commitments. We are in business to fulfill a need, and the people whose needs we are fulfilling are depending on us. Being in business is making a commitment to be in business.

We don’t come into life fully formed, and our lives are a continuous process of shaping and crafting the character and person that we want to become. Along the way, we will encounter others who have the traits, experience, knowledge, and achievements that we aspire to attain. There is the temptation to follow after individuals without honestly evaluating what their lives represent or what we can learn from them.

Science is a “systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.” Through the structure of the study, different scientists can arrive at different conclusions. This is why scientists come to opposing conclusions on issues such as the treatment of COVID 19, global warming, critical earth population analysis, just to name a few.

Each day roughly 120 million people (as of 2015) walk into a workplace somewhere in the United States. Annually, half of these workers personally witnessed some form of ethical misconduct, according to the Ethics Resource Center (ERC). These are not occasions where employees are privy to the CFO committing fraud or other such significant scandals but are more likely it’s the everyday brand of unethical behavior such as lying to a supervisor or submitting a false expense report.
