To understand how culture affects our business, we need to understand the existing culture within our business.

Every organization has a culture. Your culture, good or bad, seen or unseen, is what keeps your organization together and functioning.

We are focusing on the definition of culture and how culture operates in a business environment. As described in the preceding blog, definitions of culture overlap, but for our purpose, the culture we are discussing is the culture of a group of people’s ways of life in their work environment. Every business has some form of inherent culture that has evolved over time.

My Merriam-Webster Dictionary (online) lists six different definition of culture. An online search produces dozens more. My take-away is that the real definition of culture is the sum of all these definitions – and more.

Before we get into the meat of the discussion about culture, it is important to understand why as business people we should be concerned with the culture in our workplace.

One of the best byproducts of writing a book is the large amount of accumulated knowledge; some of it is in my book, some still in my file cabinet, and some still stuck in my head. Corporate culture is a topic that is still stuck in my head. While corporate culture was not expressly addressed in Zebedee and Sons Fishing Co, Business Advice from the Bible, it is a topic that is imbedded in the entire book.

How do you feel when someone tells you “You are doing a fantastic job.”

My intent is to always be blogging about current issues I am experiencing in my business and how the Bible is useful in not only arriving at a solution but at teaching me how to handle similar solutions in the future.

A chasm exists between the business attitude toward selfishness and the biblical commandment for humility.

I’m having a great day; everything is going my way, the sun is shining, and I’m feeling good. You could make the argument that I’m happy and I’d probably agree.
