Workplace friendships are almost always problematic. I concede that there are strong justifications for workplace friendships, but in our overzealous effort to portray our workplaces as happy, friendly, and as a place to belong, we de-emphasize and ignore the downsides of workplace friendships.

One of the best pieces of business advice I have ever received was, “never go into a meeting without an agenda.” Following that advice, every meeting I am in charge of has a written agenda with copies for all in attendance.

The Golden Rule

I’ve been thinking about how to apply the Bible verse above, known to some as the Golden Rule, to our business world. Surely in a business climate that has an unfortunately low level of employee engagement, is dependent on customer satisfaction, and verbally strives for a high level of reputation, such a simple principle would have some lasting impact.
