I want to recommend a book about negotiating: Never Split the Difference, Negotiate as if Your Life Depended on It. by Chris Voss. What is unique about this book is Chris’s perspectives derived from his experience as an FBI hostage negotiator. When you are negotiating for the lives of hostages, you don’t get to follow typical negotiating rules such as “be prepared to walk away, “ or “split the difference” (hence the title).

Bending The Rules

I was fed up with my cable TV, so I called to cancel. On the other end of the line, a very polite person listened to my complaints, gave me a marginally assuring response, and then “went against company policy” and gave me four months free cable and two years at a steeply discounted price. Cable TV wasn’t so bad after all.

The total mortgage and consumer debt levels in the United States reached $15.7 trillion by midyear 2018. The second highest level was $14.7 trillion ten years ago. As a nation, we are accumulating an astronomical amount of debt. Between our personal and national debt, we are drowning in liabilities.

Becoming unmistakable seems to be a popular phrase. I heard it several times this summer at conferences. I have read about it in many articles. And I probably have mentioned it to my staff. My question is, “What is it that needs to become unmistakable?”
